VIENNA WOODS
Seduced by the waltz of "Tales of the Vienna Woods" by Johann Strauss, staying
in the city, one day I decided to do a tour and see if it was true what many people said that the forest had a special enchantment, a kind of magic spell, and I wanted to be part of that spell and wrap myself in it and so I came south of Vienna, just where the slopes of the Alps start, they are the Vienna Woods. It is well known that musicians, writers and artists from different centuries were inspired by the beauty of this wonderfull place was also a place of rest and hunting that clearing the Austrian monarchy there from the bustle of the city. In the middle of streams and springs I can glimpse a beautiful hills landscape which give you the feeling you have wavy shape like sea waves, there are in a lot of beech, oak and birch, there is fantastic in spring or summer I lay on the cool grass and watch the clouds pass through floating like mountain peaks. After a long walk I stopped occasionally to look at different flowers and plants that were in this place, spellbound by the charm of the forest came inadvertently to "Mayerling" one royal hunting lodge and where Rudolf of Habsburg and Baroness Mary Vetsera took their own life. You can not visit the Pavilion only the chapel.
Leaving from there, heading down into the deep forest it is an abbey called
"Heiligenkreuz" (the Holy Cross)it is considered the second oldest Cistercian monastery in the world, is well known for his recordings of Gregorian chant.Architecturally it is Romanesque but it is noteworthy when you enter a courtyard baroque column of the Holy Trinity and the cloister where are buried members of the Babenberg dynasty.Near there went through the "castle Liechtenstein" and Holdrich mill built in the twelfth century by the Ottomans destroyed and rebuilt 1884.
In the summer months are held "Nestroy Theatre Festival". "Höldrichsmühle" where Schubert wrote "Under the Linden".We continue walking past this place what is remarkable is to visit some caves groundwater called "Seegrotte". This cave was a gypsum mining area due to the mining of gypsum and formed a kind of underground lake since 1912 they left for extractions and in 1932 it was member of a tourist attraction in the forest as the largest underground lake Europe.
Arriving from points Kahlenberg trails where we have to emphasize "Stefanie warte", a gazebo in honor of the Belgian Princess Stefanie was the wife of Crown Prince Rudolf of Hapsburg. This viewpoint opened in 1887, has a height of 22 meters and is built in the style of the Ringstrasse, also offers views of the hills and valley forests Danube. Near the lookout this Baroque church is highly recommended Kahlenberg visiting for its artistic value.Going on the right you find a path that will lead to different winegrowing villages as Grizing , Nussdorf and kahlenbergdorf which are famous for their "heuriger" these are traditional taverns serving young wine originally from there and typical local food is good but for me it has to do with the wine of Spain.
Here ends my journey through the Vienna Woods and I leave the famous Waltz of the Tales of the Vienna Woods to become more enjoyable reading.
